The Proposal

JACKSON SQUARE, NEW ORLEANS: NEW YEAR’S EVE

Alejandro adjusts his sports coat; he is getting ready to propose to his college sweetheart. The crowd enthusiastically waits for the New Year’s countdown. Laughter, party streamers and music fill the air. It is one minute till midnight.

ALEJANDRO

(with a nervous smile)

Lannette, you know how much I love you right? You know that right?

———-

There is a small pause, Lannette looks at Alejandro with a surprised face, just seconds away from foretelling what’s to come.

ALEJANDRO

(still nervous)

I just wanted you to know that, because, well, will you……..

———-

The clock strikes Midnight; Alejandro has yet to finish his sentence. Lannette  jumps up and down. Alejandro takes a box from his coat pocket.

LANNETTE

(still jumping and screaming for joy, she hugs Alejandro)

Yes! Yes, yes yes yes……..oh my God, yes!

———-

The couple’s friends, adjacent and witness to the moment, proceed to snap pictures of the two. Lannette is still in shock, still jumping, and still laughing. Alejandro is thinking, oh God what did I just do? Fireworks fill the sky as confetti washes over the crowed.

The fireworks cease and the couple remain hugging. Alejandro never finished his sentence, he just got the “I will.”

Why? You don’t want the world to know that you are a great guy? Hey… at least you didn’t have to kneel on one knee buddy!
